Meet Our Newest Designing Mom: Heidi Yarger

by Cat on January 31, 2011

I know it’s always a fun week when it’s time to announce a new Designing Mom joining us! Heidi Yarger of Spitfiregirl Design joins us as our graphic/web design contributor.  She has been involved with some pretty terrific design projects including fellow Designing Mom Abby Larson’s Style Me Pretty site.  What a talented mama! Read on about Heidi and please help me welcome her to Mom Inc Daily!

My Background & what I do:

Hey everyone! I’m thrilled to be a part of such an amazing bevy of creative ladies….Cat, thanks again for including me!  My name is Heidi Yarger, and I’m the owner of Spitfiregirl Design, a graphic design studio that creates integrated communications – identity, print & web – for for the wedding and lifestyle industries. You may have seen our work here*here*…and here*.

I’ve been a designer for (eek!) 16 years, and a business owner for over 10! Hard to believe but I’ve only had one salaried job my entire career…I always had the gumption to work for myself.  I’m also mother to an amazing little guy…our 10 month old son, Evan.

How about your Family/Work Life?

Ahh, work/life balance…what is that exactly?!? I must admit that I thought it would be a little easier than it actually is. Running a business and having a baby is hard work. My husband is an architect with a big project on his plate, and I’ve got a full work load so figuring out the best way for us to have time together, as a family and ourselves is a work in progress!

Big or Small/your proudest accomplishments
1.  As an entrepreneur
I’m a self taught designer who really worked my way up to where I am now. I taught myself not only design but also how to run a business. I’ve been completely referral-based for the past 3-4 years now and have some big goals for 2011…more on that later!
2.  As a mom
I think my proudest accomplishment as a mom, is just being a mom! I tell people it’s the hardest and easiest thing you’ll ever do. I’m not sure how much I play into this, but I am so proud that Evan is such a fun-loving, happy kid.

3.  As a woman

In 2000 I rode my bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles for the California Aids Ride. To hear me talk about it you’d have thought I did it yesterday…I’m still kind of amazed 😉

Are there any designing moms you look to/are inspired by?
All of them! It would be hard to pick just one because I have such respect for all moms, in particular ones that are also entrepreneurs. I think following your passions is a great gift to your children.

Biggest challenge and greatest reward to being me?
My monkey mind! I’m always coming up with ideas for my business, my clients, my home…there is never enough time in the day to process them all!

Give us a quick rundown of your typical day:
My work days are all about research and design…I feel so lucky that a good portion of my day is spent perusing beautiful imagery for inspiration. I read a TON of blogs (design, wedding, lifestyle) as well as magazines like Lucky, How, Metropolis & GQ. I try to save as much business operation tasks and such for after hours.
We have a nanny who comes to our home Tuesday – Thursday to look after Evan, so those are my hardcore work days. Luckily I have a great home office so it allows me the freedom to see him during lunch or breaks, and also sneak in work during his naps, etc. on the days I don’t have childcare. I usually take Fridays off to spend time with Evan, as well as my fellow mom friends and their kids. It’s a great break for us both!

Friday Roundup: Carmel Valley Ranch

by Cat on January 28, 2011

So these are photos of Carmel Valley Ranch…where wild turkey and deer seemed to be cued to appear upon each guest’s entrance.  There was even a woman swinging with her child on the outdoor swing under the moonlight during check-in.  Who paid the animals and this woman?  It was a fun getaway for ‘Zilla and a perfect space for me to work.  If you’re looking for family vacation ideas click here to visit the site.

And before the weekend commences:
• Stay tuned next week because we’ll be introducing a new Designing Mom to Mom Inc Daily!

• Have you checked out the Jacadi online sale?  I want this...and this...and this...

Have a happy Friday and weekend everyone!

A Calendar for Moms

by Cat on January 27, 2011

by Designing Mom Liberty

I know we live in the digital age. I handle most of my life from my
iPhone while my Mac sits neglected in a corner of my studio (hey,
it’s the reality of life as a mom of 3).  What is also reality is that
there simply isn’t a way for me to contain my family’s schedule neatly
in the iCal function. I tried. But there just wasn’t a way to
visualize the day, the week, the various overlaps of kiddie classes
and carpools, and to also have a place to jot down dinner ideas and
shopping lists and to see it all at once.
So I returned to paper. And at first I bought your run-of-the-mill
office supply store weekly calendar… But last year, a fabulous
friend of mine bought me a new calendar and I’m a convert. Erin Condren is a local Los Angeles mom herself and I’ve actually done a few shows at
LA boutiques where she’d sell her gorgeous wares a few aisles
over from me. I’d always admired her clean, bright, bold and colorful
style that resonates with a modern sense of style, but i hadn’t paid
much attention to her calendar until i got one myself.
Come to find out, not only is this calendar very cute, filled with
bright colors, great labeling stickers and actually customizable with
names and even family portraits (awesome), but it’s actually the only
one I have found that displays the days vertically – so that each day
has a section for morning, day, and evening in a way that works really
well for a mom’s lifestyle.
This is a feature i can’t give up now, and don’t want to.
I’m already planning which of her 2011 calendar covers go well with
our family portrait… And though you can now get then
non-personalized planners through the Target website, Ive gotta say,
seeing my family’s sweet faces on my planner all year has helped me to
remember what really matters most as i look ahead at crazy days ahead.

Make: Carina’s Granola

by Cat on January 25, 2011

by Designing Mom Carina of Nonchalant Mom

I made potholders and granola for all my friends, it was a really fun project and well… I make really good granola! (post and recipe also on my blog ). I also put a family initial on the potholders to make them a bit more interesting…

4 cups organic rolled oats
2 cups sliced almonds
1 cup raw pepitas
3/4 cup flax seeds
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup honey
1 cup raisins (optional)

put oven rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 300 degrees. line a pan with parchment paper.

toss together oats, almonds, pepitas, flax seeds and salt in a large bowl. whisk together oil and honey, then stir into oat mixture until well coated. spread mixture in baking pan (it takes two) and bake, stirring occasionally, until golden brown about 1 hour. stir in rasins and let cool on a rack.

the recipe is easy to change around and add any of your favorites! it also makes a great gift instead of a bottle of wine when you visit someone if you put it in a nice jar with a cute home-made label….just an idea!

it’s that simple and it is super yummy!
