Blog Roundup: Project Nursery

by Cat on August 31, 2011

Are you digging this nursery like I am?  The monogram panel is chalkboard paint and I love the pop of marigold in the closet.  To check out more details from this room, visit the newly revamped Project Nursery.

Acme Party Box store opens in Palo Alto!

by Cat on August 29, 2011

If you’ve been sweating over the details for your little one’s birthday, then look no more.  Acme Party Box just opened in Palo Alto and has an online shop with all of the necessary goodies to throw the perfect party…adult to kiddie aged.  Jessica at the studio had a chance to get their expert advice on essentials for party planning…

1. What are some  favorite things to decorate a kid’s birthday party table with?

2. What are some of the more unique party favors/giveaways you’ve seen lately?

We think our ACME Party Box kids favor bags are some of the most unique (and green!) party favors out there for kids. Our reusable 100% cotton bags are filled with colorful twig pencils made from sustainably harvested tamarind trees, seed tins filled with surprise organic seeds for planting, and an adorable award-winning plush finger puppet for fun imaginary play once the party is over!

Another idea is to engage kids in an interactive craft project where they learn a new skill, have fun, AND get to take their accomplishment home to enjoy. Our terrarium party kit gives you instructions and materials (everything but the plants!) for the kids to create their own living miniature world. We have candle making kits that make it easy and fun for all ages to make beautiful beeswax candles. This fall we are expanding our line of party craft kits for children and adults, so stay tuned! We also host parties in our store that are focused on a wide range of high quality, engaging craft projects, many of which utilize recycled materials and found objects as well as natural materials, so guests learn a new skill and will never approach craft materials in the same way!

We love the idea of having a party at the local zoo and in lieu of disposable party favors having the group adopt an animal in honor of your child’s birthday. Taking guests to the zoo and visiting that animal during the party will have a more lasting impact than a party favor can, and you can print an adoption certificate for each guest and enclose it with a photo of the adopted animal. We have a special Zoo Party Box that we developed in collaboration with Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, DC and in addition to ACME donating 10% of the proceeds to the Zoo, you can also support the Zoo’s Adopt a Species program http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Support/AdoptSpecies/.

3. If you have to splurge on one element of a children’s birthday party what would be?

The decor. Buy tableware, centerpieces, and linens that celebrate your child’s special day but that can be reused next year or re-purposed into your home as everyday linens, play toys, and decorative items for their bedroom. Beautiful, high quality party decor that is meant to be memorable and cherished for years to come may seem like a splurge at first, but it ends up being a smart investment.

Family Discount to Picasso at the De Young

by Cat on August 25, 2011

When my father immigrated to the states he had barely anything to his name and certainly had never stepped into a museum. But the first time he laid his eyes on a Picasso he said he was instantly mesmerized. And later on, during my parent’s honeymoon, he convinced my mom to spend their surplus gift money on a “fake” Picasso that still hangs in the downstairs rec room of my childhood home. My father took us often to museums which is where I learned to appreciate and marvel at the greats…their tenacious and exquisite command of color, technique and creative subjects. These little journeys inspired me greatly and certainly influenced my love for the arts both personally and professionally.

So this is why I am soooo excited to tell you about a special discount for all of you in the Bay Area (or those planning to visit) that the De Young Museum is offering families for their exhibit Picasso:  Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso.

From now until September 2, you can receive a 20% discount on tickets for families by using coupon id: PFAMILY when you purchase tickets on their website.  There’s a limit of six tickets.
