Make: Wool Storage Boxes

by Cat on January 4, 2011

2011 is destined to be a crafty year at the studio.  Jaclyn happens to be one of the craft gurus here and she and Carly are planning an amazing redo of our greeting card shelf (we’ll be showing that when it’s done so keep on the lookout!).  In the process of trying to figure out how to salvage and economically budget out cool ways for storage, she came up with this very chic and cozy idea of wool braided boxes.  I thought we’d share this with all of you since all it takes are some scrap wool yarn and any of old box laying around the house.  The box is so soft I need to ask Jaclyn to make a coffee cup cozy out of these!
1. Gather materials. You will need: yarn or twine {I used a soft white wool, aqua cotton thread and jute}, hot glue gun {we found ours at a discount store for less than five dollars}, scissors for trimming, any scrap cardboard boxes {I found a pretty shoe box in my closet}.
2. For the small pencil cup, I made a long, looses braid of wool yarn to wrap around my box {it helps to use a bit of tape to hold down one end while braiding}.
3. Now that we have our lovely braid, start gluing from the bottom wrapping around the entire box until it is covered in fluffy woolen braids.
4. For the larger shoe box, I decided not to braid but to alternate materials to create a lovely pattern.

These are lovely! Any required size/diameter for the wool yarn?

I’m glad that you love them Kimberly! There is no required size/diameter, but I would suggest a thick wool yarn. It’s easier to cover the box with a thicker yarn and is a lot fluffier, if that’s what you’re after.

Hi Jaclyn,

Such a great project, I love this! This inspired me to want to do this on other things….I have a crazy chandelier that I am bored with…what do you think? So fun!

I am friends of your dad and Michelle. I grew up with Michelle and Travis! Travis sent me your link, I am glad he did. I look forward to following!!
