The Daily: The Ocean Sitter

by Cat on January 13, 2011

This one’s for my cousin Pat and her newborn…
I haven’t had to do this in quite some time, but when ‘Zilla  was still taking two naps I had a secret drive that he and I would take.  At that time, I was overwhelmed with both work deadlines and a picky napper who often necessitated the humming of a car engine to soothe him into sleep.  I’d pack baby, books, iphone, client orders, bottles and diapers and head down to the ocean.  Luckily the water is very close to us and I would hit Route 1 where instantaneously the city landscape seemed to flip on itself and be ravaged by the waters.  Summers in San Francisco can be cold to say the least, and the ocean can be aggressive…there were days when the sand would pelt the car and sweep across the roads, stinging your arms if the windows were rolled down.  I was amongst surfers but I’d try and look for the comraderie of other mothers driving the stretch.  When ‘Zilla would wake, we’d sit in the car by the ocean and point to birds and dogs and the endless cobalt waves.  Below are pictures I would take while parked on the side of the road, listening to the ocean and moving through emails and efaxes while he slumbered.  I conducted a lot of business on those drives.  Even though I may not have felt it then, I have such fondness and sentimentality of those drives.  Every time we go there I feel a sense of kinship with the ocean and the windswept trees–I thank them for lulling my son into perfect slumber each time.
Is there a secret drive or place you take your little one for naps?  If you do please share with us!

I loved reading this! Napping is serious “business” isn’t it!! So nice to have the ocean on your side.

i loved reading this, cat. you capture it so well. unfortunately, both of my kids were not fans of the car, so my early months of motherhood were spent walking and walking and walking around the city with baby en sling, coffee in hand and cell phone in pocket. though i was exhausted, it was always so great to be out in the world, surrounding by urban excitement and fresh air, with cuddly babe tucked close to me to share the experience (if only through osmosis). i really miss that time.
